Address Verification Service (AVS)

Address Verification Service (AVS) checks are provided by payment providers. A credit card validated with AVS is checked using the provided billing address. Validation occurs together with authorization of the transaction. Strict address verification rules often fail due to mismatches arising out of typographical errors and multiple address variations. By default, payment processors conduct the AVS check using the account holder’s address number (for example, the “123” in 123 Main St), and zip code. If both items match, Subscribe receives a Full Match return from the processor. If one of the two match, Subscribe considers this a Partial Match. Subscribe considers either a Full Match or a Partial Match a success. A No Match return causes the transaction to be canceled if the AVS policy is being enforced. The AVS return codes are used to check the TransactionStatus.vinAVS for a FullMatch or PartialMatch. If either of these values is returned, consider the AVS result successful and continue. If the Transaction is approved (that is, Authorized status is returned), but either AVS or CVN (Card Verification Number) is not acceptable, call Transaction.cancel() to remove the Authorization. SeeScreen Subscribers for Potential Fraud During Purchase Use Case for an example of how to use AVS checking via API.
