# Set Up Billing Email Notifications to Send to Subscribers

You can configure Subscribe to automatically send email notifications to your subscribers for various billing events including impending transactions, an overdue payment, Subscription expiration or renewal, and payment processing. To support this functionality, you must both set the corresponding flags through the Subscribe API and supply Vindicia with the corresponding email templates.

## Set Up SMTP Relay Email Settings Through Vindicia Support

Emails are not directly generated by Subscribe; they are routed to your email provider and generated using your existing email (SMTP) server. This means that any emails the subscriber receives are sent from your email server and are much less likely to be caught up in a spam filter or ignored by the subscriber than an email that comes from a 3rd party not recognized by the subscriber.

Vindicia configures Subscribe for you with the SMTP relay settings you provide.

1. For the initial Subscribe setup, you must provide the following information in the Merchant Account Configuration (MAC) document.

   | Item | Value |
   | - | - |
   | SMTP Server Address (IP address/DNS name): |   |
   | SMTP Server Port (default 25): |   |
   | From address (for example, [support@company.com](mailto:support@company.com)): |   |
   | Reply-To address (for example, [support@company.com](mailto:support@company.com)): |   |
   | User: |   |
   | Password: |   |

2. You must also allowlist the [Subscribe SMTP Email Relay IP addresses in Staging and Production](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/Vindicia_Subscribe_Product_Description/page/topics/subscribeIPStaging.html).

   * [Subscribe Staging](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/Vindicia_Subscribe_Product_Description/page/topics/subscribeIP.html): does not require Simple Authentication and Security Layer \[SASL]
   * [Subscribe Production](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/Vindicia_Subscribe_Product_Description/page/topics/subscribeIPProduction.html): (requires SASL)

3. Following your initial Subscribe setup, if you desire changes to your SMTP relay settings, you can open a ticket with Vindicia product support who will modify the setup at your direction.

## Set Up Email Notifications Templates Through Vindicia Support

Determine the email notifications to generate.

In order for Subscribe to issue an email notification, you must first provide Vindicia with a customized email template for the particular event type. An email template includes a combination of the general message content (the greeting and so on) in HTML format and email tags which are replaced by data from Subscribe when the email is generated.

For information about how to customize an email template for your business, see [Using Subscribe Email Templates](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/howTo/page/topics/r_usingSubscribeEmailTemplates.html).

For information about Subscriber Notifications and a list of Billing Events that can trigger a notification email see [Customer Notifications](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/SOAP-Programming-guide/page/topics/ProgGuide_CustomerNotifications.html).

1. Provide the configured email templates to Vindicia.

Vindicia first uploads the templates for testing into Staging.

2. Test the templates in Staging and confirm they meet your needs.

3. If any changes are required, provide updated templates to Vindicia.

4. Test the finalized templates, and provide approval to Vindicia.

After you provide the final approval, Vindicia uploads the email templates into the Subscribe production environment.
