# Manage Grace Period And Retry Strategy for Failed Payments

You can increase subscriber retention by retrying payment processing for subscriptions that fail payment collection at renewal time. To support this functionality, you must define a grace period and retry strategy through Vindicia support.

* \*\*Use Case Number:\*\*2-8-03
* \*\*Completed By:\*\*Vindicia Solution Architect
* \*\*Estimated Completion Time:\*\*NA

## Basic Scenario

Return codes received from the payment processor are categorized by Subscribe as either a Soft-Fail or Hard-Fail error.

* Soft-Fail error codes represent payments that may be recoverable by Subscribe and are subject to retry processing.
* Hard-Fail error codes represent payments that cannot be recovered and are not subject to retry processing.

**Note:**

Subscribe does not attempt to bill a credit card that has returned a Hard-Fail code during the grace period unless a new payment method is provided.

When Subscribe receives a Soft-Fail after the first attempt to bill a subscriber's credit card, the time span between subsequent attempts is referred to as the retry strategy. As part of the retry strategy, the grace period is defined as the total amount of time an entitlement remains active in Subscribe before the subscription is canceled for non-payment.

## Design Approach

Vindicia support configures your retry and grace period rules for you. The following retry strategy settings are the recommended best practice, however, the final decision is up to your organization:

| **First retry attempt:** | 6 days after the initial failure |
| - | - |
| **Subsequent attempts:** | 6 days after the previous retry |
| **Total attempts:** | 4 |
| **Grace period before disentitle:** | 27 days |
| The following diagram shows an example of how the retry strategy is applied. | |

## Define Grace Period And Retry Strategy Through Vindicia Support

1. For the initial Subscribe setup, define your retry and grace period strategy in the Merchant Account Configuration (MAC) document.

2. Following your initial Subscribe setup, to change your processing rules, you must open a ticket with Vindicia product support.

   **Note:**

   Approval for the change must be obtained from an authorized user.

   Vindicia support will modify the retry and grace period rules at your direction.
