# Enabling the Vindicia Subscribe API to Access PayPal Express Checkout

To configure Vindicia Subscribe to support PayPal as a payment method, you must first create a PayPal merchant account. For more information about the PayPal merchant account setup and payment flow, see the [PayPal Developer documentation](https://developer.paypal.com/).

This section shows you how to set Vindicia Subscribe as a third-party submitter for your PayPal transactions so that you can offer PayPal as a payment method to your subscribers.

**Note:**

Vindicia Subscribe treats PayPal as any other Payment Method. Subscriptions and Transactions cycle through the same status changes. Email notifications are issued to subscribers at the same points in the process. Refunds are processed in the same manner. PayPal is simply another payment method, equivalent to credit cards in Vindicia Subscribe.

To grant Vindicia Subscribe third-party API access permissions to the PayPal system:

1. Configure your PayPal merchant account to enable Vindicia Subscribe access, and set up a working communication channel.

2. Obtain PayPal API credentials. See the PayPal Developer Guide for more information.

3. Enter the API account username: `paypal_api1.vindicia.com`.

4. Select API Access Level:

   * Express Checkout
   * Reporting and Backoffice APIs
   * Authorization and Settlement APIs

5. Work with Vindicia Client Services to record your PayPal Merchant Account email address in your Vindicia Subscribe account. (This is configured using name-value pairs while defining your Vindicia Subscribe Merchant Data Settings.)

6. Obtain permission from PayPal for Reference Transactions (recurring billings such as subscriptions.)
