# Testing Subscriber Email Notifications

You must test to confirm that subscriber emails created with Vindicia Subscribe email templates are being delivered successfully. For delivery failures, you must troubleshoot the issues causing the failure.

For information about creating and uploading email templates, see [Using Vindicia Subscribe Email Templates](r_usingSubscribeEmailTemplates).

## Send a Test Email

1. Perform the operation necessary for the billing event to trigger the email you are testing.

   * For information about types of billing events, see [Vindicia Subscribe Billing Events](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/SOAP-Programming-guide/page/topics/Subscribe_Billing_Events.html) in the **Vindicia Subscribe SOAP API Programming Guide**.
   * For information about triggering billing events, please contact Vindicia.
2. Check that the email is received. If the email is not received, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

## Identify the Source of the Email Delivery Failure

The email delivery failure can be caused by an email routing issue or by a Vindicia Subscribe application issue. In the Vindicia Subscribe Portal, check the account associated with the email:

* If the email activity is logged on the account, the cause of the delivery failure is an email routing issue. See "Email Routing Issue" below.
* If the email activity is not logged on the account, the cause of the delivery failure is an application issue. See "Vindicia Subscribe Application Issue" below.

## Email Routing Issue

If you have located the email activity logged on the account, please notify Vindicia that there is an email routing issue. Include the Account ID and the Transaction ID associated with the email.

Vindicia will coordinate communication directly between your merchant IT department and Vindicia IT to resolve the email routing issue.

## Vindicia Subscribe Application Issue

If you do not see the email activity logged on the associated account, confirm that all required conditions have been met for the email notification, as described in the following table. If all conditions have been met, please contact Vindicia for further investigation.

| Notification Type | Required Conditions |
| - | - |
| **All Email Notification Types** | Confirm that the email template has been uploaded to Vindicia Subscribe. No email is sent if that email template has not been uploaded. See The Email Template Uploading Process in [Using Vindicia Subscribe Email Templates](r_usingSubscribeEmailTemplates). |
| **Pre-Billing Email Notifications** | These notifications are not sent unless `billing_notification_days is > 0` in the `BillingPlan`. |
| **Success Email Notifications for One-Time Purchases** | These notifications are not sent until the one-time Transaction status is Captured. After calling `Transaction.capture`, you must wait for the Transaction status to update (this can require an hour in Staging and up to three hours in production). You can check the Transaction status in the Vindicia Subscribe Portal. For information, see [Disposition History Details](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/Subscribe_Portal2_User_Guide/page/topics/transactionWorking.html#ariaid-title10) on the Transaction Details page in the **Vindicia Subscribe Client Portal User Guide**. |
| **Success Email Notifications for Recurring Payments** | These notifications are not sent until the status of the Transaction generated by the Subscription is Captured. |
| **Hard Fail Email Notifications** | These notifications are not sent at the time of the Hard Fail error. Instead, the email is sent after the number of days indicated for First Retry Days in the Vindicia Subscribe Merchant Options configuration (indicated by `next_activity` in `transaction_billing`). |
| **Expiration Email Notifications** | These notifications are not sent unless `expireWarningDays > 0` in all `BillingPeriods` in the `BillingPlan`. |
| **Cancellation Email Notifications** | These notifications are not sent unless the Pre-Billing Email Notification has previously been sent. |
| **Refund Email Notifications** | These notifications are not sent until the Refund status is Complete. After calling the `Refund` object or selecting Issue Refund in the Vindicia Subscribe Portal, you must wait for the Refund status to change from Pending to Refunded (this can require an hour in Staging and up to three hours in production). You can check the Refund status in the Vindicia Subscribe Portal. For information, see [Refund Details](https://docs.vindicia.com/bundle/Subscribe_Portal2_User_Guide/page/topics/transactionWorking.html#ariaid-title4) on the Transaction Details page in the **Vindicia Subscribe Client Portal User Guide**. |
